Sometimes far away countries and islands are not that impossible to visit. This is the case for Svalbard, an archipelago high up in the Arctic Ocean. Learn how I made a very cheap flight to Svalbard during midsummer.
Svalbard is famous for its big population of polar bears. It is also famous for its wild arctic scenery and beautiful landscape with many seabirds, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. For good reasons a number of impressive photo books have been published about Svalbard. But only rather few tourists are coming to Svalbard. The one who comes can take beautiful pictures in Svalbard.
How to go to Svalbard?
Tourists to Svalbard go by boat (cruise ships) or by plane. I have only experience with a travel to Svalbard by flying from Denmark through Oslo, but that was fine anyway. Especially because you are able to make use of Scandinavian Airlines bonus tickets to go the far distance from another Scandinavian country up high north to Svalbard. Because Svalbard is a part of Norway and as such a part of the Scandinavian cooperation you are only charged very little of your SAS bonus points.
A number of cruise ships go around the Svalbard islands. Other bigger Cruise ships just make a shorter stop over from Norway.
In general I can recommend boat trips in Svalbard as the countryside isn’t that easy to travel, unless you have plenty of time. But some visitors spend weeks enjoying the spectacular landscape and seascape.
Longyearbyen in Svalbard,
We spend some days in the main town Longyearbyen, an old miners’ town and now mostly for tourists even some mining is still going on in Svalbard. Because so much of Svalbard is still virgin countryside and in fact strictly preserved The Svalbard Archipelago and its surrounding fjords and Arctic Sea is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. I took some very fine pictures and enjoyed super weather conditions.
Be aware of that the weather might be very changeable anyway. It is also amazing to enjoy the sun not only all day but all time during the nights in midsummer. It might be a challenge for your sleeping but that is a small sacrifice for enjoying the arctic magic.
Wildlife in Svalbard
Only rather few animal species are able to live in Svalbard, as the living conditions in the arctic are tough. On the other hand some species like the seabirds are living here in huge numbers.
It can be very exciting for the visitor to Svalbard to take pictures of all this teaming wildlife in the short but hectic months of the arctic summer. Arctic terns, sandpipers, eiders and skuas are nesting just in the town so wildlife is very close to you, when you stay in Svalbard. Also winter has its attraction for the visitor to Svalbard.
During winter the snowmobile is a very used tool of transportation for the locals and also for many excursions. Such Svalbard excursions during winter might be just day tours or tours to more far away localities in Svalbard that need staying overnight in a tent or some kind of facility.
